In Memoriam: Dedo Weigert (1938–2025) - A Life Dedicated to Light
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dedo, the pioneer and industry leader who we had the privilege to work with him and accompany during decades of his work as a Director of Photography, an inventor, a pioneer, a filmmaker and a mentor.
Dedo was just “a child in the sandbox”, as he was descibring it – passionate for the creative and the technical side of filmmaking. He was truly gifted at bringing people together and inspiring them with his enthusiasm and passion to work towards a common purpose. His Team excelled in craftsmanship and technological expertise. This enabled a unique exchange of ideas and achievements with the best of every one of the team and the visions of … – yes, here we could say – an outstanding industry achiever. Dedo himself very often started his ideas with “I dream of … ” – so we could also say, a bridge builder between dreams and realizations, that resulted in truly intuitive and reliable equipment and solutions that accompanied image creators worldwide in their profession.
Many of his team stayed with Dedo for decades and contributed with their expertise, many went onwards and became skilled DOP’s, camera-operators, gaffers and lighting designers. He was always faithful to his fascination of light and shadow and never lost his curiosity in this field.
We will miss him, his visionary spirit, his remarkable endurance to explore and develop and never give up, the many facets of his personality, which was so strongly rooted in humanistic values and his deep respect for the creative.
Dedo’s core development: the dedolight. This multi award winning lighting system set a new standard of lighting instruments, which had been missing in the pallet of creative tools for filmmakers. This product category will remain a fixed star in our industry and we will continue this under our new name and incorporate his and our visions for further development for the future.
Dedo understood and cared about the industry – his contributions to the film technology industry are plentiful.
The international responses to Dedo’s death in the film world speak their own language of his legacy and we are striving to continue this legacy with our competence as Dedo wished it to continue, to pass it on to the next generations of image creators and dreamers.
Dedo’s compassion, creativity and kindness will be missed.
